The band is well known for changing almost everything it can about its songs in concert, transforming them into Latin funk jams, keyboard-driven prog rock excursions, and elaborate medleys, but this album goes further, splicing together very different performances of each of its song into dazzling, and sometimes bewildering, musical collages. This isn't just an edited or subtly studio-enhanced live album along the lines of Kiss' Alive! or Thin Lizzy's Live and Dangerous: Remember not only subverts the purpose of most live albums -- capturing a band's concert performance as accurately and unobtrusively as possible -- but is also far more fragmented than anything they recorded in a studio....full text |

| This mammoth, two-disc live album documents the Fiery Furnaces actually using instruments to play the music from their albums—in real time! Honest, they run through the idiosyncratic details of their alleyway sound, truthfully laying them out with ruthless efficiency, hitting drums and keys and producing sound and breathing air and, perhaps only once, fucking up. Which is why it’s way, way better than anything they’ve ever done in the studio insofar as it doesn’t intentionally crush me under the immense weight of its uncompromising pretense....full text |

| Remember is a live album collected from the Fiery Furnaces’ performances from 2005 through 2007. It includes material from their deep back catalogue, though not recent highlights like “Restorative Beer”. Also, it may just be a perverse trick but you might expect to hear the song that most prominently features the word “remember”—in one of the band’s most memorable refrains, on an album that bears its name. That’d be “Here Comes the Summer”, and nope, it’s not on the album. But we should probably come to expect that from this group. As their approach to live music suggests, they’re more interested in re-tooling audience expectation than meeting it head-on....full text |
